Population Sampling Guidelines

The MISO Survey Team follows these guidelines when constructing stratified random samples of undergraduates. At larger institutions, the Survey also follows these guidelines when creating samples of faculty, staff, and special populations.

Population: 800

The standard sample size is:

  • The entire population

If using split sample technique, the sample size is:

  • The entire population

Population: 800 – 1,000

The standard sample size is:

  • 500 people

If using split sample technique, the sample size is:

  • The entire population

Population: 1,000 – 4,000

The standard sample size is:

  • 700 people

If using split sample technique, the sample size is:

  • 1,000 people

Population: 4,000 – 10,000

The standard sample size is:

  • 1,000 people

If using split sample technique, the sample size is:

  • 1,500 people

Population: greater than 10,000

The standard sample size is:

  • 1,500 people

If using split sample technique, the sample size is:

  • 2,200 people
